What is Functional Medicine?

The How and Why

Functional Medicine is a philosophy of medical practice that works to determine how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual. Think of a tree with wilted leaves.  To make the tree healthy, you adjust the soil and provide nourishment to the roots. This is the essence of Functional Medicine. Many times people go to the doctor with symptoms of poor digestion, insomnia, weight gain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anxiety, high blood sugar, hormone imbalances, or just feeling run down all the time. Most doctors will prescribe a pill for each of these symptoms, but Functional Medicine will look at what is causing the problem. In many instances, changes in your lifestyle, whether it is diet, exercise, or stress management, can lessen or alleviate these symptoms and help you feel better. The question is HOW to make those lifestyle changes and that is where a Health Coach can help.

What is a Health Coach?

It’s All About YOU!

 

As a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, I work with individuals to help identify the root cause of their health concerns and to make the necessary lifestyle changes to become healthier. No one diet or one exercise program is right for everyone.  As your health coach, I will listen to you and hear your story. We will explore what is important to YOU: your goals, your food preferences, your lifestyle, your strengths, likes, and dislikes. Together we will design a plan that is right for you.

Change is Not Easy

So many diets and programs advertise the “easy” and “simple” method to change, but, in reality, as you probably know from experience, it is NOT that easy. Frequently, people come to me and say, “I know what I need to do, but I just can’t seem to do it.”  That is because it is hard to do alone. It takes motivation, knowledge, and support. Together we will put the pieces together. Not only will I give you the information you need to make the right choices, but I will also help you figure out how to incorporate those healthy choices into your lifestyle in a way that feels right for you. Without judgment, I will be by your side guiding and encouraging you as you do the work to make gradual changes towards a healthier you.
